I have always really loved the work of Charles and Ray Eames, I have probably posted their powers of ten video 50 times, a little while ago I watched a documentary on their studio and a few weeks ago a new documentary about them came out “the architect and the painter” I just got myself a copy of this and I’m pretty excited to watch it!
I just finished off this illustration for Australian Traveller magazine, The article is about Wonderland City, a place i had no idea existed until i illustrated this, In 1909 tamarama beach in Sydney was a theme park, the whole beach was filled with rollercoasters, carousels, seals, elephants, rides, an aquarium, it was absolutely amazing, sadly it was closed and dismantled in 1916 and there is no trace of it left.
I will never forget the day, I was in year ten, about 15 years old, I had worked all week on an assignment, the night before the due date my father went on to the home computer (this was about ten years ago, when everyone shared computers) all of a sudden I hear it… BAM… something bad had happened, he crashed the computer, my files were fucked, I was pissed, my dad, he didn’t really know what to do, I started calling him an idiot, I probably yelled it at him, what the fuck, he had totally ruined a weeks worth of work all those hours, all that time felt absolutely and completely wasted. In the middle of telling my dad what an idiot he was he stopped me and asked, Adam look at the situation, the compter crashed, yes your assignment is gone but what is yelling and whining about it going to do? is it going to get it done? no, there is nothing you can do but start again, so sit down and re do it. I sat down and re did the assignment in 2 hours, which had taken me almost 5 days.
I got three things out of this. 1. if something fucks up, getting angry will only make the situation worse, just deal with it. 2. working on the last minute can give you a week of free time and 3. Always ALWAYS back up files!!!
This is all that remains from a file I was working on for most of last week, I’m not sure exactly what happened but I think it has something to do with a photoshop plug in I used, at the same time I was starting up a new back up drive and this was taking days, so this meant there was no back up from anything I was working on. A sad day for me yes, but maybe it was meant to be as I actually don’t mind the colours of the scrambled thing that was left over… I think it was meant to be and one day I will create something with this.
First day back at work, realised it is still a public holiday and most people are at the beach or sharing a drink with friends in a park somewhere… but that pretty much sums up my 2011, I have never worked so much in my life and I have never been happier. I worked on projects with the most amazing people that I could have once only dreamed of working on, I filled too many books with too many to do lists, ticked off a few years worth of goals n one. It’s going to be difficult to top 2011 and I can’t wait to get started.
Thank you to anyone who I worked with, emailed me, looked at my work.
Earlier this year I illustrated some journals for Live inspired, commissioned by Colagene. I illustrated around 12 quotes, all the lines on the pages, everything all hand drawn, was such a fun job and i just received a bunch of printed copies.
